The British Voice In My Head

So, I guess this is my very first guest post (well, I don’t guess, I know, I guess, wait, ugh). The guest writer (a.k.a, my wife) has no clue she’s doing this, but I took something she wrote, edited it just slightly, and I’m posting it. If you never hear from me again, you will know that she was not happy with me, but here goes, enjoy…

I’ve become dependent on my GPS to get anywhere and everywhere. That lovely, British voice comes on to tell me just where I need to go. “Turn left in 200 feet. Turn right in 600 feet. In half a mile, exit right.” And I do it. I follow her. She tells me where to go and I believe every word…until I don’t. Suddenly it seems she is wrong. Then, I find myself quarreling with the British voice in my head. “I don’t see my destination on the right!” So I turn around. She says, “Rerouting,” then tells me to turn around again. After yelling at her for a minute or so, I find myself arguing with myself about whether or not I should trust her. Eventually I make it to my destination, but I feel sheepish because I somehow managed to lose an argument with myself AND my GPS. The British voice is usually right. I should probably listen more often than I do.

God’s leading is quite similar to that of Garmin. He may not lead us with a pillar of fire like He did for the Israelites, but if we listen closely and put our full trust in Him, He will tell us where to go. “Walk through that door. Close that window. In one year, exit here. Rerouting.” Yes, sometimes, He needs to reroute us because we create our own paths, and they don’t match His route. But when I listen and follow, I always get to the proper destination. Sometimes it’s not the route I’d choose, but it’s always the right one.

Maybe if He spoke in a British accent I’d listen a little better. Hey, God, do you think you could make that happen? I’ll be listening.

Now, whisper a brief prayer in your best British accent that I live to post another day.

  1. So true! God’s always leading, but when we decide to take another path, He never gets mad and stops guiding. He simply begins to re-route from our current location very calmly. It’s comforting to know that when we get off course, He simply says “Re-routing from current location”,,, Good post!

By the way– I think God’s probably Asian. Everything else is made in China….
