Two Sons, Two Lies: A 5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1: Come to Your Senses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading:<\/strong> Luke 15:11-19\u2014Today we\u2019re focusing on the parable of the prodigal son, specifically on the younger son’s decision to leave and his eventual return to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional:<\/strong> When he found himself in the pigpen, undoubtedly having hit rock bottom after living a life of selfish sin and squandering everything, the younger son had an epiphany. He \u201ccame to his senses\u201d. The original language suggests he returned to himself, implying that sin had caused him to lose his true identity. This is what prolonged wandering from God does. It costs far more than just money, reputation, or friendships; it can rob you of your very identity. The enemy’s lies are not loud and obvious. They are quiet and gradual, pulling you farther from your true identity, one compromise at a time, until you suddenly look in the mirror and no longer recognize the person staring back at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But notice that coming to his senses was not the end of the story. It was the beginning of his return. Rock bottom, as painful as it is, can be a blessing when it opens our eyes to the truth. At rock bottom, distractions fall away. At rock bottom, pride loses its grip. And in the most painful, broken moments, the lies we believe can suddenly be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong> What lies have you been believing that have quietly pulled you away from who God made you to be? In what area of your life do you need to \u201ccome to your senses\u201d today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application:<\/strong> Spend five minutes in silence today. Ask God to reveal any area of your life where you have drifted from your true identity in him. Write down what he shows you without judgment, simply as an act of honest acknowledgment before him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Day 2: The Father Runs to You<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading:<\/strong> Luke 15:20-24\u2014It\u2019s important to recognize that the father sees his son from a distance, runs to him, and restores him fully and immediately, without hesitation, explanation, or even a scolding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional:<\/strong> The son likely rehearsed his confession on the long walk home. He had a speech prepared. He had already decided he was no longer worthy to be called a son and would settle for the position of a hired servant. He braced himself for the response he deserved. Surely the father would scold him, perhaps even punish him. But before he could deliver a single word of his carefully prepared apology, his father was already running toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This detail is not incidental. The moment the father saw his wayward son on the horizon, he abandoned his dignity and sprinted toward his son to assure him of his love. This is the posture of God toward every wandering soul who turns homeward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God is not waiting for you to clean yourself up before he welcomes you. He is not standing at the door with a list of conditions for your restoration. He is scanning the horizon for the moment you appear, and when he sees you, he runs. The grace of God does not wait for you to arrive fully prepared. It meets you on the road home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong> Have you ever felt you needed to get your life in order before<\/em> approaching God? How does the image of the running father challenge that assumption?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application:<\/strong> Read Romans 5:8, which describes how God demonstrated his love by sending Christ while people were still in their sin\u2014not after they had improved. Meditate on what it means that God’s love moves first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3: You Cannot Sin Your Way Out of God\u2019s Love<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading:<\/strong> Romans 8:35-39\u2014Paul declares that nothing in all creation can separate believers from the love of God in Christ Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional:<\/strong> The prodigal son returned home carrying one lie that had survived the journey. Even after his eyes had been opened to so much truth, one falsehood remained lodged deep in his heart: I am no longer worthy to be called my father\u2019s son<\/em>. It is a lie that lingers in many of us, even long after other lies have been dismantled. And it is one of the enemy’s most effective tools against God’s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul, writing to the Romans, reveals this lie with extraordinary thoroughness. He lists every conceivable force\u2014death, life, angels, demons, the present, the future, height, depth\u2014and declares that not one of them possesses the power to remove you from the love of God. Then he adds the phrase “nor anything else in all creation,” which leaves no room for exception. Your worst sin fits inside that phrase. Your most shameful moments fit inside that phrase. Your longest season of wandering fits inside that phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot sin your way out of God’s love. The love of God is not a reward for good behavior. It is a settled reality secured by the blood of Jesus Christ, and it is not subject to your performance. His love held Him on the cross. And all he asks in return is for you to believe in him and accept him as Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong> Is there anything in your life or past that you fear makes you unloveable? How does Romans 8:39 speak directly to that fear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application:<\/strong> Write out the thing(s) you are most ashamed of in your life. Then write Romans 8:39 directly beneath this list. Keep that paper somewhere visible this week as a daily reminder\u2014nothing<\/em> can separate you from God\u2019s love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Day 4: The Older Brother\u2019s Mistaken Identity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading:<\/strong> Luke 15:25-30\u2014In these verses, the older son responds to his brother’s return with anger. Here we see that the older brother was also struggling with an identity problem; he believed that while his brother was making all the wrong choices, his right choices had been earning his father\u2019s love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional:<\/strong> The older brother never left home. He never squandered his inheritance. He did everything asked of him. By every outward measure, he was the faithful one. And yet when his brother came home and the celebration began, something ugly surfaced. He was furious. He refused to go into the homecoming celebration. He stood outside, arms crossed, cataloging his years of service as though presenting an invoice to his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His words reveal everything: “All these years I have been slaving for you\u201d (NIV). He used the word slaving<\/em>. He did not say serving<\/em>. He did not say living with you<\/em>. He said slaving<\/em>. In his own mind, he was not a son enjoying his father’s house. He was a laborer trying to earn his father\u2019s love and blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the trap of religious performance. You can be in the Father’s house every single day and still relate to him as a stranger trying to earn access rather than a child already at home. The older brother’s anger was not really about his brother. It was the overflow of years spent believing that love had to be earned, and that grace given freely to another was grace stolen from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong> Do you ever find yourself keeping score with God\u2014tracking your faithfulness and expecting something in return? How does that posture affect your experience of God\u2019s love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application:<\/strong> Read Ephesians 2:8-9, which states that salvation comes through faith as a gift, not through works, so that no one can boast. Ask God to show you any area where you have been relating to him as an employee rather than a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Day 5: Neither Son Had It Right\u2014But the Father Did<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reading:<\/strong> Luke 15:31-32\u2014Notice that the father responds to the older son\u2019s complaint with tenderness, reminding him that all the father owns belongs to him, and that celebrating the lost son’s return was a heavenly response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devotional:<\/strong> We should not overlook how Jesus chooses to end this parable. It ends with the father outside the party, as he has left the feast to go after the older son, just as he ran to meet the younger son. Both brothers needed him. And the father pursued both of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like his response to the prodigal, the father’s final words to the older son aren\u2019t judgmental, but tender. He does not scold him. He does not shame him. He reminds him: you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. In other words, you never had to earn it. It was always already yours. The celebration for your brother has not taken what belongs to you. It is simply what love does when what was lost is found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the heart of God reflected in all three parables shared in Luke 15, and it is the heart of God toward you, as well. God doesn\u2019t simply reward the faithful and reject the fallen. He runs to both the wanderer, and<\/em> to the self-righteous, then declares to both: come inside. This is home. Everything I have is yours. Let us celebrate together. Know today that no matter which brother you most associate with, the Father loves you; you are His.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection:<\/strong> Which brother have you been more like\u2014the one who felt unworthy to come home, or the one who felt owed something for staying? Which response from the father most speaks to you? Record your thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application:<\/strong> Close this five-day guide by writing a letter to God in your journal. Tell him honestly which son you have identified with most and what lies you have been believing. Then, ask him to speak his truth over your identity\u2014not based on your failures or your faithfulness, but based solely on who he is as your Father.
