What Makes God Laugh?

Does God laugh? Is there any chance that God has a sense of humor? I am 100% certain the answer is YES. So the next question is, “What makes God laugh?” I think I have a few guesses…

For the past year I’ve been promoting a curriculum called The Quest For Holiness. In the month of September our churches around the world, in many languages, will be studying this material. Yesterday I noticed the front page of the curriculum sitting on my desk. It’s an introductory letter from yours truly explaining the material. I signed my name at the bottom of the page and placed my title under my name:

Darren Schalk
Curriculum Editor

But when I glanced again, I was horrified to the core. It didn’t say “Curriculum Editor,” it actually said “Curriclum Editor.” CURRICLUM! I sensed a moment of divine irony.

And God laughed.

Our first child, Jake, was totally planned. But our next two were in no way planned. In fact, my wife gave me no warning there was even the possibility of a second pregnancy. She was so positive it would be negative that she secretly took the test. But she was wrong. The test was positively positive. I was on the couch tying my shoes when she came in and asked me if I had slept well the night before. “No, not really, why?”

“Maybe because of… THIS!”

She then shoved that little pee stick in my face. But it wasn’t the usual lined kind that would have given me a moment to process exactly what I was looking at. It was the DIGITAL kind that actually showed the word:

So I had no processing time. The truth was unmistakably there before my eyes and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I had to teach a class that morning and, to this day, I have absolutely no clue what I said. A few weeks later she had her first ultrasound. Two circles appeared on the screen. The nurse said, “You know it’s twins, right?” We were befuddled and bewildered.

And God laughed.

Over the past few months we’ve had a rough go at life. Trials, situations, relationships, car accidents, sicknesses, seizures, ER visits, hospital stays, and countless other problems have weighed heavily on us. It’s been taxing, both emotionally and physically. And sometimes I ask God why He hasn’t shown Himself. I tell Him He needs to move more quickly. I remind Him that I’m not as strong as He thinks I am and that my situation just seems to get worse and worse. I wonder if at some point it might even get too large for Him to handle.

I pray all these things, and then sometimes I get quiet long enough to actually listen for His voice. When I do, I can almost hear it, faint and low, way off in the distance…

As God laughs.

  1. So fun when God laughs. Well, not right away fun, but later fun when we are laughing with Him. Great thought Darren.
